Speech and Language Checklist

Select your child's age from the links below then check off the features your child demonstrates consistently in everyday speech.

The 1 year old child should:

  • Use sounds and maybe a few words
  • Point at common objects in books or play
  • Imitate consonants and vowel combinations
  • Use most sounds in vocal play
  • Gesture and vocalize to indicate wants and needs
  • Take turns in play and in making sounds
  • Wave "bye"
  • Play "pat-a-cake" and "peek-a-boo"
  • Recognize their name when it is spoken
  • Understand names of familiar objects
  • Follow routine activities and occasional requests
  • Give a toy when requested
